Innovative D.I. diesel engine mounting enables first D.I. front wheel drive car
Challenge
A new engine mounting system was required to isolate the vehicle manufacturer's highly efficient Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine, overcoming its inherently severe noise and vibration characteristics and making it acceptable to the driver
Approach
First-principles investigation were made of the engines vibration characteristics, and restraining forces required in the engine mount system
An analytical approach was applied to wide range of potential systems
Modal analysis applied to decouple the vibration modes
An Idealised system was developed into a production feasible route
Benefits
Radically different engine mount system developed to meet customer requirements
Interior refinement levels became comparable to the previous softer Indirect Diesel Engine (IDI) engine
Company was able to put worlds first DI diesel front wheel drive car into production
All diesel cars are now DI, and use basically this type of innovative engine mount system
