Torque sensing driveshaft enables ‘smarter’ driveline systems
Challenge
  • 2WD and 4WD driveline systems can offer more functionality if they can be made to be ‘smarter’
  • Real time driving torque output can be applied to torque distribution management, vehicle stability control, petrol/electric powertrain integration and even service life analysis
  • For R&D purposes, and for later volume production applications, a robust, compact, non contact driveshaft torque measurement device was required
Approach
  • Research the technologies available, from those already in use in other industries, those used at the R&D or specialist level, and those still in the laboratory
  • Identify UK Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) innovation as the most promising: co-operate with developer to scope out application issues for a seed-corn technology operating in the harsh environment underneath a vehicle
  • Devise and conduct prototype validation trials on rigs and vehicles, address all foreseen issues: evaluate hardware and software
Benefits
  • System effectiveness, response rates and durability proven
  • Tier 1 and technology supplier gained practical awareness of automotive driveline application opportunities and issues
