Attention to methodology makes V8 saloon driveline a commercial
success
|
|
Challenge
- Enable a V6 FWD saloon car range to be extended to include a high performance V8 RWD derivative
- To specify a new propshaft, differential, halfshafts and mountings, yet introduce minimum changes to BIW, chassis, fuel and exhaust systems
- Minimise investment in, and disruption to, the volume production assembly line sequence
Approach
- Involve the supplier (in this case GKN) from the outset, and agree core principles for the installation, interfaces and relationships with associated systems
- Conduct road load data and NVH assessments alongside system modelling, then correlate the key characteristics, highlight any issues and devise solutions
- Resolve imbalance concern through application of gearbox interface Variation Simulation Analysis
- Co-operate with Final Trim & Assembly team to minimise driveline installation effort, time and tooling
Benefits
- The efficient methodology contributed to
an acceptable Return on Investment
business case
- GKN introduced a top specification version
of its advanced Monobloc Tubeshaft
driveline product
- The launched vehicle received high praise
for excellent driveability from press reviews
- MG-R enjoyed a new product in a
prestigious segment
- The company refreshed its RWD driveline
engineering capabilities
